We've been having fun making lots of owls.  The ones shown are made into tea light holders and look really cool all lit up.  We've made some into salt and pepper shakers and soap holders (shown in a post below).

Since this summer is quickly coming to a close, we've also been working on some fall stuff - some are shown below and check back for more!

I can't believe it's August 11th!  Where did July go?  We've actually had a few firings in the "baby" kiln, and I'll show you some pictures of those - we're also firing the big kiln today and will be unloading on Wednesday, so be sure to check back in!

Fresh out of the kilns!

We fired on Monday, June 30th.  The small kiln was fired to cone 04 for the low fire pieces, and the big kiln was fired to cone 6 for the bulk of the items.  We had mixed results.  The low fire pieces came out nice and bright - we were really pleased with them.  The high fire ended up with some glazed combinations not turning out as we'd hoped, but that's what you get when you try new combinations.  Take a look below and see what you think!

Bisque Fire

6/30/2014

We bisque fired on Thursday the 26th - as you can see below we had a packed kiln!  We glazed over the weekend -lots of new glaze combinations - and are firing both kilns today.  The small kiln is already finished it's cone 04 firing (about 1700 degrees), and the large kiln is well on it's way to the cone 6 (2100-2300 degrees) target!

We made sure to bisque fire the low-fire pieces before glazing this time, so hopefully we will not have a repeat of the bubbles in the glazes, which apparently can occur as gasses are emitted from the clay during bisque firing.  So since these pieces are fired to bisque before glazing this time - fingers crossed!

We will be letting the kilns cool completely to avoid any cracking/crazing of glaze, and will be unloading Wednesday morning - the 2nd of July - so stay tuned!

Fresh out of the Kiln!

PictureCrabby Cannisters
Two Crabby Cannisters fresh out of the kiln - you saw them In Progress - check out the interior pic as well!  Even though I waxed both the rim of the lid, and where it sits on the base, these were stuck shut because of the natural shrinkage of clay during the firing process.   This is why you generally fire the pieces together - so the lids still fit after firing.  Because the pieces expand and contract during the firing process, you take the risk of the pieces ending up warped and they'll no longer fit together.    - one rubber mallet later - and some good taps around the rim and they're open!

Also new this firing are two Americana Candle Holders - ready for the summer!  Other assorted pieces are shown as well - let me know what you think!

We're trying our hand at slipcasting in molds!  To the left you'll see two of the three different Owl molds we have.  A little birdie told me we just may be getting a few more molds....so stay tuned for the glazed versions and to see what else we come up with!

In Progress

Picture
To the left you'll see two cannisters in progress - the beginnings of which you can see in my post from last week.  Next comes bisque fire and then glazing - just don't pick the lids up by their handles just yet!!

I'll be firing early next week!

Back in the Studio!!

Saturday found me back in the studio!

It was a productive day I'm glad to say, and the picture to the left shows most of what was accomplished!  Some slab work in the molded oval dish, as well as the flower dish, the car coasters and the Crab dish with the wavy edge - that was pulled from a mold I made last year - it has crabs around the inside rim!  I also made another Crab napkin holder and am slowly figuring out the best way to fire them without them slumping.  Hopefully the hand made porcelain support will do the trick.

I also threw a few bowls, and a two-piece cannister set.

All were ready for trimming on Sunday and finishing touches and underglazing will likely commence in the next few days.

Stay tuned for updated pics!

Although the studio has been quiet as of late, Spring Fever has inspired some new ideas, so as soon as my Day Job slows down just a tad, I'll post some in-progress photos -so stay tuned!

In the meantime, I'd like to ask that any of you who are able to attend a fundraiser this weekend to benefit our friend and colleague, Steve Price, please do so!  The details are below - hope to see you there!
